It is a popular hill station about 63 km Northeast of Mandalay. May Myo (Pyin Oo Lwin) is about 1070meters above sea level. The climate is delightfully cool and pleasant year round. In 1896, a permanent military post was established in the town and later, because of its climate, it became a hill station and the summer capital of British Burma. The British named the location Maymyo, literally May's Town in Burmese, after Colonel May, a commander of the Bengal Regiment. It was an important educational center during colonial times.
Now it is well known for its colonial style houses and beautiful gardens.
The beautifully created Botanical Garden of 1915 and the adjacent Pyin Oo Lwin Nursery are famous attractions of Pyin Oo Lwin. The Botanical garden spreads over 170 acres of land and 70 acres of water. The master plan of the Garden was laid out on the design of Kew Gardens in England with over 4000 trees, nearly 600 different floral species, seasonal flower beds and a great collection of wild orchids, the garden has become a world-class botanical garden.
