Kalaw is situated in Shan State. A former colonial British hill station, this small-town offers cool temperatures at an altitude of 1320 meters. There are many colonial houses still remain in Kalaw. The Kalaw and its surrounding is inhabited by the Bamar, Paoh, Palaung tribes and some Indians.
It is a great place for trekkings. The 3 days trekking from Kalaw to Inle (48 km) is interesting by passing through the Palaung, Paoh and Inthas villages of Shan Plateau with night stops at the monasteries of the villages.
The Green Hill elephants camp with re-plantation just 45 minutes’ drive from Kalaw is a very interesting project which is focused on protecting the local ecology, elephants and traditions of the local people. Nature grows undisturbed in this (150 acres) private preserve, with a Myanmar elephant camp offer the opportunity to learn about Mahouts and their Elephants.
