Hsipaw (in Burmese Thibaw) is a little town situated on the legendry Burma Road, constructed on 1940 to use as a trade route between India and China. Still now, it is on the one of the main highway to the Chinese border. The town itself is the throne of Sawbwas since1636.
The royal residence of the last Shan prince Sao Kya Seng and his Austrian wife Inge Sergent (she became the princess Thusandi after their marriage in 1957) is remained in Hsipaw. After the prince was vanished without a trace in 1962, this residence is taking care by Mr. Donald, a relative of Prince Sao Kya Seng.
Princess Thusandi (Inge Sergent) wrote a book about her memorial days in Hsipaw called Twilight over Burma: My Life as a Shan Princess.
The surrounding of Hsipaw is very picturesque. There are many interesting excursions we can do visit to the Palaung tribes village, promenade by long tailed boat on the Myiytnge River to visit some peaceful Shan villages. We can reach to Hsipaw by road and by train.
