Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda also known as Golden Rock is a well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site in Myanmar. It is a small pagoda 7.3 meters built on the top of a granite boulder covered with gold leaves. The rock seems to defy gravity, as it perpetually appears to be on the verge of rolling down the hill. Legend has it that is balancing on the hair of Buddha and it is the most important pilgrimage in the country. The hair was given to a hermit by Buddha himself, who in turn found a boulder which resembled his own head. The hermit built a small Stupa on the top of that boulder and pilgrims have made their way to see it ever since. It is the third most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Burma after the Shwedagon Pagoda from Yangon and the Mahamuni Pagoda from Mandalay.

The pagoda is located near Kyaikhto town, 210 kilometers east of Yangon. The Golden Rock is situated at 1,100 meters above mean sea level, on top of the Kyaikthiyo Hill of the Eastern Yoma Mountains.

The Kinpun base camp village 16 km Mt. Kyaiktiyo. From the Kimpun base camp to Yatetaung truck station, we can go by trucks. Then pilgrims and visitors have to climb to the Golden Rock by foot for 1.2 km up, it takes about one hour to reach. There is a truck road for this 1,2 km but it’s allowed only to bring the materials not the passengers for the security reason.

From the base camp at Kinpun, the hiking trek to the pagoda is about 11 kilometers and many devotees do this trek as part of the pilgrimage rites. There are also many temples and pagodas, which have been built recently on other hills in the vicinity of the Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda that are visited by pilgrims and tourists by trekking along foot tracks.

The best time to visit is from November to April.
